Abstract

This study investigates how the POWER strategy improves ninth-grade students' descriptive writing skills at SMP Negeri 1 Rantau Utara. Many students lack interest in learning English and find current instructional methods unengaging, which adversely affects their writing proficiency. The research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with pre-test/post-test control groups. The experimental group received instruction using the POWER strategy (Plan, Organize, Write, Edit, Revise), while the control group underwent traditional writing instruction. The study involved 60 ninth-grade students equally distributed between the experimental and control groups. Statistical analysis using a t-test in SPSS version 23 demonstrated significant differences in writing abilities between the two groups (Sig. 0.000<0.05), leading to rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). These findings indicate that implementing the POWER Strategy effectively enhances descriptive writing skills among ninth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Rantau Utara.
