Abstract

Speaking is a communication process that includes producing, receiving, and sharing information, ideas or thoughts in order to create meaning. This research aimed to analyze the students’ speaking problems and the factors that cause speaking problems in English daily communication encountered by the students of Islamic Boarding School. This research is a qualitative research method. The participants in this research were six students in the fourth grade of Al-Majidiyah Islamic Boarding School. In collecting the data, the researcher conducted observation, interview, and documentation. To analyze the data, the researcher used four major phases of data analyses called by data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The result of this study showed that each student faced different problems in speaking English in their daily communication. The students faced inhibition, nothing to say, low participation, mother tongue use, lack of vocabulary, poor in grammar, and poor in pronunciation. The factors that cause all problems were fear of making mistake, shyness, anxiety, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation.
