Abstract

This study investigates the use of code-switching and code-mixing in teaching English as a foreign language at SMAN 1 Aceh. The main objective of this research is to analyze the code-switching and code-mixing strategies employed by teachers in the teaching context of the aforementioned high school, as well as to explore the impact of using these strategies on students' understanding and language proficiency. This research adopts a qualitative approach with data collection techniques including classroom observations, interviews with English teachers, and text analysis. Findings reveal that code-switching and code-mixing are common strategies used by teachers in teaching English at SMAN 1 Aceh. These strategies are employed for various purposes, including providing explanations, clarifying understanding, and facilitating interaction between teachers and students. The impact of using code-switching and code-mixing on students' understanding and language proficiency varies. While some students experience improved understanding and confidence in English, others face challenges in distinguishing between English and their mother tongue. Therefore, this study suggests the need for careful assessment of the use of code-switching and codemixing in teaching English as a foreign language at SMAN 1 Aceh, as well as the development of more effective strategies to enhance students' understanding and language proficiency.
