Abstract
Essay writing is an analytic or interpretative literary composition usually dealing with its subject from a limited or personal point of view. This means that your own thoughts and voice, as the author, must come through to the reader. This research aimed to analyse the regular and irregular verbs used in the essays written by students in the eleventh grade at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Medan. Additionally, the researchers wanted to determine which verb was most dominant and why these verbs were used and became dominant. This research is qualitative research. The data collection technique uses a test and interview. According to the findings, the total number of irregular verbs counts for 68,46 percent of the total, whereas the total number of regular verbs counts for 31,54 percent of the whole. The final result of this research is that a regular verb is a dominant verb used in the essays written by students. It is because regular verbs have a specific pattern of change, which involves the addition of -d or -ed to the end of the word. Therefore, the students also said because the sentence patterns are easier to write, they are easier to remember the regular verbs. Students generally consider that writing using regular verbs, which are easier to write, is best for them because it is easy to memorize and predictable in writing.
