Abstract

This study explores the perceptions of 8th-grade students at Nurul Ilmi Integrated Islamic Junior High School regarding the use of Canva as a media for writing recount texts. Conducted during the academic year 2023/2024, this research involved 22 participants who have utilized Canva in their English classes. The study addresses the challenges and deficiencies in students' English writing skills. The research methodology used is a qualitative approach with phenomenological types, focusing on the lived experiences of the students. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews, both of which are descriptive qualitative methods. The findings indicate that students have a positive view of Canva, considering it user-friendly, helpful in simplifying the writing process, and effective in conveying story ideas. Despite some challenges, such as issues with font selection, students recognize Canva's significant impact on their writing skills and creativity. The study concludes that Canva is a valuable tool for enhancing students' narrative retelling abilities and fostering effective communication in the digital age. Recommendations for future research include longitudinal studies, comparative analyses with other digital tools, qualitative investigations, and exploring teachers' perspectives on integrating Canva into writing instruction. This research, conducted within the Department of English Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra, contributes to the understanding of technologyenhanced learning in writing instruction and underscores the potential of Canva in improving students' writing abilities in recount texts.
