Abstract

This study aims to analyze vowel pronunciation errors made by students of English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training of UIN SU. The formulation of this problem is to find out what are the causes of pronunciation errors that often occur in English vowels and how to overcome these problems. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The instruments in this study used interviews and tests to collect data. The subjects in this study amounted to 25 students of English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training of UIN SU. The data collection technique is based on the criteria set by the researcher. The results of this study show that the causes of vowel pronunciation errors often occur due to vocabulary that is rarely spoken and rarely heard, and selfconfidence also affects when speaking to others. The data results showed that 112 (100%) students made pronunciation errors that were more dominant to long vowels, which amounted to 73 (65.17%) errors and short vowels amounted to 39 (34.82%). This cause can be overcome in several ways, one of which is to practice speaking a lot and find vocabulary that is rarely heard or used.
