Abstract

Vocabulary is knowledge involves knowing the meanings of words and therefore the purpose of a vocabulary test into find out whether the learners can match each word with a synonym, a dictionary tape definition, or an equivalent word in their own language. This researched aimed to find out whether there was a significance effect of using English vocabulary on student’s vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade. It was carried out at the eighth grade of SMP S Imelda under the calendar of academic was 2022/2023. The total number of population was 90 students and the researcher took 15 students for experimental group and 15 students for controlled group which means 30 students as total of the sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used tests in the form of descriptive text as the instrument. The tests were pre-test which was given before the treatment and post-test which was given after the treatment. Then, the data obtained were analyzed by using t-test in manual with 5% (0.05) significance level. Further, the researcher found that the mean score of post-test in experimental class was higher than controlled class (87,3> 76,0). The t-test result also presents that tvalue got 5.464 and ttable is 2.048; the sign. (2- tailed) is 0.000 < 0.005. Therefore, the result of tᵒ> t-table generated that H0 (null hypothesis) was rejected and Ha (alternative hypothesis) was accepted. It can be concluded English dictionary has significant effect on the students’ vocabulary mastery at SMP S Imelda Pulo Braya.
