Abstract

Anxiety has been considered as a hurdle that affects students' learning process, especially for students who have to speak in front of the class. The purpose of this study is to describe students' behaviors that illustrate anxiety when learning to speak English. This process was observed and researched on eleventh grade students at Sman 1 Gunung Tuleh. This research aims to investigate (1) To find out what is meant by anxiety in learning to speak English (2) To find out how students' anxiety in learning to speak English (3) To find out why students feel anxious in learning to speak English. This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, data collection techniques through interviews with informants, observation, and documentation. This research uses the data analysis model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2018), namely data condensation, data display, and verification or conclusion. From the data that has been analyzed, it is revealed that there are seven anxieties in learning to speak English at SMA N 1 Gunung Tuleh. The seven anxieties are: (1) taking cover; (2) flipping through books; (3) shaking head (4) looking down, (5) stammering (6) trembling and (7) pale face.
