Abstract

Confidence is an attitude towards our skills and abilities to trust ourselves in positive sense to manage self. Self-confidence influences psychology in performance. People with low motivation have lack of confidence and others psychological problems. It brings negative in determining their learning such as perception, motivation, and the outcome. This study uses Quantitative and Descriptive Analysis Method. This study examined the level of thirty one participants' speaking confidence by taking Likert Scale of Motivation Test Battery (AMI) Questionnaire and open-ended interview to explore views, experiences and beliefs to participant at Tenth Grade and non-participant of SMK YP. Tunas Karya Batang Kuis Medan. The results of the study showed the speaking confidence level of the participants is average to high, but in fact after exploring, they admitted that have some problems. Most of them have lack confidence/motivation, less vocabularies, and less practice in speaking. In addition, the teachers as non-participants noticed the students do not understand exactly what they read, speak, or listen in English class. In conclusion, the students are not described as high confidence and not experienced well in speaking English.
