Abstract

Difficulties in reading short stories is the problems faced by students in understanding reading short stories texts, and these problems can interfere with their learning, especially their reading skills. The purpose of this study was to describe the difficulties of students in reading short stories in class VIII MTs Negeri 2 Medan. The research methodology in this study uses a qualitative method where the data collected by the researcher is based on the results of interviews and also direct observation by the researcher. The participants of this study consisted of four students of class VIII-13 Mts Negeri 2 Medan. After the researcher analyzed the data, the researcher found that the students' difficulties in reading short stories were presented in four difficulties, namely: (1) Difficulties in the step of scanning, where students had poor reading strategies that students used in their attempts to complete the task; (2) Difficulty in finding specific words information, this happens because students do not understand the contents of the short story text; (3) Difficulties in understanding vocabulary, where students have limited vocabulary; (4) Students' interest in learning English, this happens because students think that English is a difficult subject. This can happen because students do not understand the whole content of the story.
