Abstract

The research that has been conducted entitled “The Comparison of Students’ Interest in Learning English Speaking Skill Through Direct Instruction and Experiential Learning Method,” with the background that students have a low interest in learning English speaking skills, and the learning method used by the teacher is not appropriate, teacher-centred focus. Therefore, in choosing the learning method to be used, it must focus on what students are interested in or enjoyed in the learning process. Because it can have a significant impact on the learning outcomes of each student. The research methodology using descriptive quantitative method. The writer conducted this research at MTS Al-Ittihadiyah Medan. The population of this study was all students of class VIII, which amounted to 119 students consisting of 5 classes. The sample in this study was obtained from the results of simple random sampling, class VIII-2, which amounted to 27 students. Data collection techniques with treatment, and questionnaires. Data analysis processing used percentage formula. The result of this study from descriptive analysis test revealed that (1) the mean score of learning English speaking skill using direct instruction is 25.1852, with a standard deviation of 4.01954, the minimum value achieved by students is 22, the maximum value is 39, and the number of students who are motivated are 2 students with a percentage of 7.41, (2) the mean score of learning English speaking skill using experiential learning method is 34.7407, with a standard deviation of 5.02756, the minimum value achieved by students is 21, the maximum value is 42, and the number of students who are motivated are 24 students with a percentage of 88.89, (3) the t-test using the IBM SPSS 16 program found that the value of sig (2- tailed) was 0.00 <0.05. Thus, the students’ interest in learning English speaking skill through direct instruction and experiential learning method had a significant difference.
