Abstract

This research has a purpose to improve the students’ ability in learning past continuous tense through Mistake Buster technique in the VIII grade at MTs Hifzhil Qur’an Islamic centre Medan 2016/2017 academic year. The subject of this research consisted of 32 students of VIII-2. The method used in this research was classroom action research. In this case the teacher of MTs Hifzhil Qur’an Islamic centre Medan as an observer and collaborator. The research conducted in two cycles, first cycle consist of two meetings, and the secod cycle onli 1 meeting. The research was conducted following: Planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The data used in this research such as: Pre-test and Post-test, interview sheet, observation sheet, and photography evidence. The result of this research showed that there was increasing of students ability in past continuous tense. Most of the students achieved a good score at the end of every cycle. The passing grade of English lesson was 80 (seventy). The mean of the pre-test was 42,50. The mean of the first cycle was 68,125. The mean of second cycle was 87,1875. It was indicated that the scores and the mean in second cycle were better than the first cycle. The percentage of students who got point 80 or more also grew up. Eventhough, In the pre-test, there were not students who got point 80. In the post-test of cycle I students who got point 80 or more there were 12 of students (37.5%). It means that there was an increasing about 37.5%. The post-test of cycle II, students who got point 80 or more there were 28 students (87,5%) and the increasing was about 50%. For the total increasing of the students’ score from pre-test to post-test of cycle II was 87,5%. In other words, the students’ ability in past continuous tense improved and became well in the first meeting to the next meeting. Second, related to observation result showed that the students more active and enjoy in learning past continuous tense, the last related to interview result, the students were enthusiastic in getting material, and had motivation to learn past continuous tense. Mistake Buster technique effective for learning past continuous tense and it could increase students’ ability in past continuous tense.
