Abstract

Google Translate is a popular machine translation used widely by people in various settings, particularly in a higher education setting where students and lecturers use Google Translate in order to be able to translate texts more easily and efficiently. Therefore, many studies have been conducted to investigate the usefulness of the utilization of Google Translate for academic purposes. This study was aimed to find out the answer based on the perception of the EFL pre-service teachers when they used it to translate texts in a translation course. The researcher employed a case study as the design of qualitative approach. In collecting data, this study used three techniques, namely questionnaire, interview, and documentation. Forty-one students answered the questions in questionnaire, meanwhile three of them joined in the interview session and their works were used as the data from documentation. In analyzing the data, the researcher employed Miles and Huberman’ framework for qualitative data and descriptive statistic for quantitative data. The results showed that the perception of EFL pre-service teachers toward Google Translate utilization, are; 1) Google Translate helps increase their enthusiasm in translating text; 2) Google Translate enriches their vocabulary and word synonym; 3) Google Translate makes text translation easier to do; and 4) Google Translate improves their translation products. From those results, it can be concluded that Google Translate has positive impacts on EFL pre-service teachers’ translation learning.
