Abstract

The study was conducted to find the influence of mother tongue on students’ mastery speaking English. The aim of this study are : to find out mother tongue of students, to find out the students’ mastery speaking English and to find out the influence of students’ mother tongue on their mastery in speaking English. This study was done by doing of the students XII MAN 3 Padang Lawas. Researcher was using quantitative methods in this study. The subject of this study is the students XII at MAN 3 Padang Lawas who has mother tongue, their mother tongue is Mandailingnese. They are mandailing native, they always use mother tongue in daily, even with their family and their environment. The result of this study are: (1) Students’ mother tongue at MAN 3 Padang Lawas is ‘’Mandailing Language’’,it is their mother tongue and they more fluent speaking with their mother tongue. All of the students come from villages in Padang Lawas, so they were using Mandailing language since they were born. (2) Student’s mastery speaking English, students’ mastery in speaking English. from 22 students there are13 (59,09%) students in ‘’Average score.’’ And there are 9 students (40,9%) in ‘’Poor score’’, form that result we can said that students’ mastery speaking English at MAN 3 Padang Lawas is in the average score. It is because of their mother tongue. It can be proven that they are very lacking in mastery speaking English. (3) the influence of mother tongue on their mastery speaking English, From research finding there are the influence of mother tongue on students’mastery speaking English, From the value coefficient, it is known that the value of t count = 0,69 with significance value is 0,5 (5)% with t table = 1,725. Researcher can concluded that the value of t count = 0,69 < t table = 1,725, it means Ho is accepted and Ha is rejected. So the conclusions is If t count < table then Ho is accepted and Ha is rejected, it means there is no the influence of mother tongue on students’ mastery speaking English at MAN 3 Padang Lawas.
