Abstract

The aim of this research were to investigate the kinds of errors and the most dominant kind of error in using gerund committed by fifth semester students English Department of State Islamic University of North Sumatera. The subjects of this study were 44 students of TBI-2 class academic year 2021/2022. This research was conducted based on Surface Taxonomy Strategy proposed by Dulay where the errors are categorized into four kinds, they are Omission, Addition, Misformation and Misordering. The researcher used Qualitative Descriptive Method to analyze the errors, including collecting samples from students’ test, identifying students’ errors, describing the errors, and explaining the errors. The result of this study revealed that the students made 326 errors, including 16 omission of errors (5%), 6 errors of addition (2%) and 304 errors of misformation (93%). It can be concluded that the most dominant kind of error the students’ made in using is misformation.
