Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out how the university students use passive voice in writing narrative text. This research wants to find out the kinds of passive voice that is used by university students in writing narrative texts and the purposes of passive voice that is used by university students in writing narrative texts. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Data collection techniques which are used in this research are documentation, text analysis, and interviews. This research uses data analysis technique from Creswell which consists of six stages. This research found that there are three kinds of passive voice and three purposes of passive voice. The kinds of passive voice which are found are: passive with be, adjectival passive, and get passive. The purposes of passive voice which are found are: the receiver of the action is more important, the agent is unknown, and the agent is irrelevant.
