Abstract

This research conducted to know the improvement of the students‟ speaking skills by using direct method in teaching at the 8th grades students of SMPN 1 Halongonan. There are two objectives in this study. The first objective is to know How is the implementation of the direct method in teaching. Then, the second one is to describe What is student improvement at Speaking Skills after applied the direct method in teaching at SMPN 1 Halongonan. This research took place at SMPN 1 Halongonan. The subjects of this study were 24 students. The type of this research is Classroom Action Research. This research consisted of two cycles. The cycle I had two meetings and the cycle II had two meetings. The data collection techniques were observations, interviews, documentation , pre test and post test. The data were in the form of field notes, obsrvation sheet and scores of the pre test and the post test. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The researcher analyzed the qualitative data through three steps: 1) reducing, 2) displaying, and 3) verifying the data. The quantitative data were analyzed by means of the score to obtain the total mean of the class. The findings of the research showed that the use of the Direct Method was able to improve students‟ speaking skills. Based on the qualitative data, the students stimulated and could develop their ideas to produce a short sentence with better vocabulary, sentence structure and pronunciation. They also enthusiastically joined the teaching and learning activities. Based on the quantitative data, the research showed that the total mean score of the class in cycle I was 57,6 then increased in cycle II was 64,9. From the data, it showed that students‟ mean score for the speaking skill was improved.
