Abstract
The research that has been conducted entitled "An Analysis of Punctuation Marks in Students' Narrative Text Writing of the Second Grade Students at SMP Nur Ihsan", with the background that punctuation marks are often neglected to be taught and learned by teachers and students, errors in the use of punctuation marks still often found, especially in writing. This research aimed to find out how students understand punctuation, how is the use punctuation marks in students‟ narrative text writing, and what the most frequent punctuation errors made by students of the second-grade students at SMP Nur Ihsan Medan. This research was conducted by applying a descriptive research method with an approach qualitative. The subjects of this study consisted of 8th-grade students of SMP Nur Ihsan Medan in the 2021-2022 academic year, and one English teacher. The result of the research showed that the second-grade students of SMP Nur Ihsan Medan already have a good understanding of punctuation and its usage, especially in capital letters and periods. The percentage of using correct punctuation marks is 74% and the use of incorrect punctuation marks is 26%. The use of punctuation in writing narrative texts for 8th-grade students of SMP Nur Ihsan Medan can be categorized as good. The most frequent punctuation errors made by 8th-grade students of SMP Nur Ihsan Medan in writing narrative texts is in the comma with a percentage of 40.3%.
