Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out whether there is correlation between students’ sentence mastery and their English learning achievement. The kind of this study was quantitative research. Therefore, the methodology of this study was correlational study. The population of this study was the eighth grade of SMP Pahlawan Nasional Medan and it was 172 students. The sample of this research was simple random sampling technique and 30 students took as the sample. In collecting data, the writer used test and documentation as the instruments. Since the study was correlational study, the data were computed statistically by using Pearson Product Moment. By using product moment correlation test with the help of the SPSS application obtained a value of is 0.964. Then > (0.964 > 0.361). This also marked with significant value of (2-tailed) is 0.000. Significance value (sig) < 0.005 (0.000 < 0.005). From the results of and significant values it can be obtained that there is a correlation between students' sentence mastery and their English learning achievement. From this statement it was stated that the alternative hypothesis ( was accepted and null hypothesis ( was rejected which means that "there is correlation between students' sentence mastery and their English learning achievement at SMP Pahlawan Nasional Medan". From the statement above, it can be concluded that the higher the level of students' mastery of sentences, the higher their learning achievements and vice versa, the lower students' mastery of sentences, the lower their learning achievements.
