Abstract

The research “The Effect of Problem Based Learning Strategy (PBL) on Students’ Speaking Ability at MTs Nurul Huda” was conducted. The population of this research was class IX at MTs Nurul Huda Medan. The samples were 56 students whom divided to two group, control class and experimental class, each group consist 28 students’. The first test of control class was pre-test, students were asked to introduce themselves. The second test was post-test, students were asked to introduce themselves again after given direct method teaching. The first test of experiment class was pre-test, students were asked to introduce themselves. The second test was post-test, students were asked to introduce themselves after being given PBL treatment. Methodology of this research is quantitative using quasi experimental method and total sampling. Researcher obtained results that there are significant effects in problem based learning method at improving student speaking ability. The t-test score must below <0.05 to be considered significance, and the score was (Sig. (2-tailed) 0.000<0.05). It means that the Allegations of Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. the mean difference points was minus -11.286 showed that there was an increasing point from post-test control results to post-test experiment results. Based on the results, it can be concluded that problem based learning has significant effect at improving student’s speaking ability.
