Abstract

This research aimed to improve students' speaking skill in English by applying Study Group technique. This research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The objective of this research was to improve students' speaking skill by applying Study Group technique of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Bakongan. The subject of this research was X-MIPA.1 of SMA Negeri 1 Bakongan in 2021/2022 academic year which consists of 20 students. This research was conducted in two cycles which each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The technique of analyzing data of this study was applied by using qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were taken from interview, observation, diary note, and documentation. The quantitative data were taken from the test. The result of data analysis showed that there was an improvement in students’ speaking skill after the implementation of Study Group technique. In pre-test students mean was 53 and students who passed KKM were 3 of 20 students (15%). In post-test I students mean was 66.75 and students who passed KKM were 9 of 20 students (45%). In post-test II students mean was 76.25 and students who passed KKM were 16 of 20 students (80%). Based on observation sheet, interview, diary notes and documentation, students were active, enthusiastic, enjoy, and interested in teaching learning process in the classroom. In other words, students’ ability at speaking skill was improved by using of Study Group technique.
