Abstract

This research conducted to know the examine the improvement of the students’ spelling through the utilization of spelling word dictation in teaching at the 1st grade students of SD Plus Anbata. There are two objectives in this study. The first objective is to know How is the implementation of the spelling word dictation in teaching. Then, the second one is to describe what is student improvement at Spelling skill after applied the spelling word dictation in teaching at SD Plus Anbata. This research took place at SD Plus Anbata. The subjects of this study were 25 students. The type of this research is Classroom Action Research. This research consisted of two cycles. The cycle I had two meetings and the cycle II had two meetings. The data collection techniques were observations, interviews, documentation, pre test, and post test. The data were in the form of field notes, observation sheet and scores of the pre test and the post test. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The researcher analyzed the qualitative data through three steps: 1) reducing, 2) displaying, and 3) verifying the data. The quantitative data were analyzed by means of the score to obtain the total mean of the class. The findings of the research showed that the use of the Spelling Word Dictation was able to improve students’ spelling skills. Based on the qualitativedata, students are stimulated and can improve their spelling skills, namely in writing and orally through spelling techniques and memorizing the alphabet. They were also enthusiastic about participating in teaching and learning activities. Based on the quantitative data, the research showed that the total mean score of the class in cycle I was 56,12 then increased in cycle II was 64,1. From the data, it showed that students’ mean score for the spelling skill was improved.
