Abstract
The objective of this study aimed to find out the readability level of the Bahasa Inggris Textbook 2018 revised edition for twelfth grade senior high school students at SMA Negeri 4 Kisaran published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. It used descriptive method to describe the readability based on The New Dale-Chall formula and Flesch‘s reading Ease formula. The data are the thirteenth texts taken from the Bahasa Inggris textbook. The finding showed that the readability score by using The New Dal-Chall formula is: text 1 got 6.81 in grade 7-8, text 2 got 7.56 in grade 9-10, text 3 got 8.27 in grade 11-12, text 4 got 6.68 in grade 7-8, text 5 got 7.28 in grade 9-10, text 6 got 7.74 in grade 9-10, text 7 got 7.89 in grade 9-10, text 8 got 6.1 in grade 7-8, text 9 got 5.0 in grade 5-6, text 10 got 6.61 in grade 7-8, text 11 got 6.56 in grade 7-8, text 12 got 5.79 in grade 5-6, and text 13 got 7.0 in grade 9-10. Meanwhile, the readability score based on Flesch‘s Reading Ease formula is: text 1 got 59-61 in grade 10-12, text 2 got 42.29 in grade 13-16, text 3 got 41.11 in grade 13-16, text 4 got 80.38 in grade 6, text 5 41.80 in grade 13-16, text 6 got 51.56 in grade 10-12, text 7 got 45.45 in grade 13-16, text 8 got 54.04 in grade 10-12, text 9 got 75.44 in grade 7, text 10 got 77.77 in grade 7, text 11 got 96.14 in grade 5, text 12 got 77.09 in grade 7, and text 13 got 73.78 in grade 7. The average score by The New Dale-Chall formula is 6.86 in grade 7-8 and by Flesch‘s Reading Ease formula is 62.80 in grade 8-9. It showed that from both of the formulas, the book is readable for twelfth grade students.
