Abstract

The current study analyzed the use of past tense in students’ writing in narrative text. The research methodology used in this study is a qualitative method with a content analysis design. The Ninth Grade at MTsS Nur Zannah Paluh Pakih Babussalam Langkat participated in this study with 20 students. Documentation and questionnaire instruments were used by researchers to collect data. An error analysis is to find out the types of errors that are made by students and the factor that influence whether they make those errors. The findings show that (1) students made errors of four types, such as omission errors, addition errors, misformation errors, and misordering errors; (2) the most prominent type of student's writing is misformation errors, with a percentage of 46%; and (3) the reason they made errors comes from a lack of writing practice. This study emphasizes the importance of a teacher and media used in learning that can support students' writing skills so that they do not make the same errors.
