Abstract

The research that has been done is entitled “The Effect of estafet Writing on Students' Writing Descriptive Text Ability at Tenth Grade of MAS Muallimin UNIVA Medan", has a phenomenon that can be taken that writing ability is a complex ability to learn. Therefore, the researcher took this title because in the MAS Muallimin school, especially in class X, it was found that students' writing skills were still low. One of the students' writing problems at the school is expressing ideas and developing their writing. The research problem of the study “Is there any significant effect of estafet writing on students’ writing descriptive texts at tenth grade of MAS Muallimin UNIVA Medan?”. Objective of the study is to investigate the significant effect of estafet writing on students' writing descriptive texts at the tenth grade of MAS Muallimin UNIVA Medan or not. The method used in this study is a quasi-experimental method, namely by doing a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The population of this study were 10th grade students of MAS Muallimin UNIVA Medan with a sample size of 18 students in class X MIA IV as the experimental class and a sample size of 18 students also in class X IIS I as the control class. The research instrument in this study was an essay test. The results of the study revealed that (1) in the experimental class, for the pretest it had an average of 53.38 then at the time of the post-test it became 73, which means there was an increase in the average score. Whereas in the control class the pretest had an average of 42.66 and at the time of the post-test it became 50.33, an increase occurred but was not comparable to the increase in the experimental class, (2) the learning method, namely the estafet writing method, made it easier for students to in exploring their ideas, building a sense of cooperation between groups, making students more active in class, and being able to write sentences using English structures correctly. So, it can be concluded that estafet writing method has a significant effect for use in descriptive text material at tenth grade of MAS Muallimin UNIVA Medan.
