Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the improving of students‟ pronunciation by using spelling bee game. The subject of this research was seventh grade students of SMP Islam Terpadu Nurul „Ilmi Medan in the academic year 2022/2023 with total 40 students. It was consisted of two classes VII-1 as the experimental class and VII-2 as the control class. This research was conducted by using quantitative approach in processing the data and getting the result. The researcher uses test as the instrument (pre-test and post-test). The data from pretest and post-test were analyzed statistically using SPSS 16. The result of analyzing data showed that there was an improving on the students‟ pronunciation from each class. It showed with the mean of pre-test and post-test score student learning outcomes increased at the pre-test and post-test stages. As for the learning outcomes of students in the control class which taught without using spelling bee game from an average score of 62 to 75.75, there was an increase of 20%. While the learning outcomes of students using the spelling bee game from an average score of 66 to 81.75, there was an increase of 23%. It means the average score in the experimental class that used spelling bee game was higher than the average score in the control class that was not use spelling bee game. Then the result of t-test is 2.478 in the significant 2 tailed level 0.018, the critical value on the t-table using 5% (0.05) alpha level significance and the degree of freedom is 1.686, in which the t-value is higher than t-table (2.478/1.686). So it can be concluded that “spelling bee games is effective to improve the students‟ pronunciation at the seventh grade of SMP Islam Terpadu Nurul „Ilmi Medan in the academic year 2022/2023”. By using spelling bee games, the teaching and learning process is more interesting.
