Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types of errors and to find out why the students made an error in writing hortatory exposition text made by the eleventh grade students at SMAS Budisatrya Medan in academic year 2022-2023. This research used descriptive qualitative research as its approach. The subject participants of this research were 10 students. The Surface Strategy Taxonomy, a taxonomy of errors introduced by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen in 1982, was used for analyzing the data. The errors in students’ written text were classified by using surface strategy taxonomy namely omission, addition, misformation, misordering. These errors consist of 11 omission errors, 4 addition errors, 16 misformation errors, and 1misordering errors. The most frequent error is error of misformation which corresponds to (50%) of the total error. Then, it is followed by errors of omission (34%), errors of addition (13%), and errors of misordering (3%). The students did the errors because they are lack of vocabulary and grammar mastering. These findings lead to the conclusion that the students had some difficulty using proper English grammar in their written assignments. In order to enhance the English teaching and learning process, it is suggested that both the teacher and the students be aware of and pay more attention to the errors
