Abstract

English has important value that cannot be ignored since English is the most widely spoken language in the world. English is generally accepted as the global language of communication, despite the fact that Mandarin and Spanish speakers outnumber English speakers around the world. However, to understand conversations in English with English speakers, it is necessary to have good listening skills as well. Unfortunately, the listening skills possessed by high school students in Indonesia are still lacking. Hence, teachers must have interesting media in order to provide interactive listening learning for students such as song and podcast. Therefore, this study concentrated to find out the most effective media between podcast and song that can be used to improve students' listening skill progress at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Medan. This study used a descriptive quantitative method which investigated from the quantitative side and generate statistics on the most effective media between podcast and song that can be used to improve students' listening skill. The test is the data collection technique used in this study. The results of the test will be used as research data by producing quantitative data. The study results showed that the average test score using song on students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Medan is higher than the test using podcast where the average test score using song is 92.19 while the average test score using podcast is 64.76. With this result it shows that teaching English using song as a learning media is more effective on students' listening skill progress at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Medan than using podcast as a learning media.
