Abstract

Reading is one of the English skills that must be learned. This study compares multiple choice and cloze test for reading comprehension for students in MAN Langkat’s tenth grade. The purpose of this study is to compare students reading comprehension using multiple choice and cloze test to see if there is a substantial difference. The researcher applies a causal-comparative design. The population in this study were students of class X MAN Langkat, totaling 30 students. The instrument used in this research is multiple choice and cloze test. There are two types of tests that have been provided, namely multiple choice tests and cloze test that have passed the instrument validation stage. The results of the data show that there is a significant difference in students' reading comprehension between multiple choice and their reading comprehension on the cloze test. This is evidenced by the value based on the test results listed in the table, it can be seen that the t statistic is 2.431 with the resulting probability of 0.021. This means that T statistic > t table (2.045) or probability < level of significance (Alpha () = 5%), so Ho rejected and Ha accepted, with the average value of multiple choice is 62.30 and the value of the cloze test is 69.93, which means that based on the results of calculations that have been done, it is found that student learning outcomes with assessment cloze test is higher than using multiple choice assessment.
