Abstract

Traffic accidents are the highest cause of death every year in the world. There are about 1.25 million deaths in the world caused by traffic accidents and most of them are motorcycles. This is a global problem, especially in developing countries like Indonesia. WHO considers traffic accidents in Indonesia as the third biggest killer after coronary heart disease and tuberculosis (TB). Based on data from PT Jasa Raharja Dumai City Representative, victims of traffic accidents in Dumai City in 2017 killed 339 people, injured 423, and disabled 3 people for life. The factor of human negligence when driving is the most dominant cause of accidents. Therefore, this study aims to determine the factors associated with traffic accidents in Dumai City. This study is a quantitative study with a cross sectional design, to 250 teenage motorcycle riders who were taken by incidental sampling. Data analysis includes univariate analysis, bivariate analysis using chi- square statistical test. The results showed that the factors related to traffic accidents were experience (pValue = 0.000), completeness of PPE (pValue = 0.000), motorcycle support components (pValue = 0.000), parental consent (pValue = 0.000). The variables that are not related include age, gender, education license ownership. From the results that have been researched, it is hoped that the role of various parties involved in driving safely, and prioritizing the use of motorcycle safety equipment. In addition, it is expected for motorcycle users to always comply with traffic regulations.
