Abstract

This research focused on the students’ problems in speaking as performance especially in making presentation at the second year of English Education Department. The research was aimed to find out the students' problems in speaking as performance and to find the causal factors of students' problems in speaking as performance. This research used qualitative method, the subject of this research was third semester students of English education ,UIN North Sumatera. The researcher used observation when students making presentation, giving interview and documentation as the tools of data collection. The finding showed that the students' problems were inhibition, nothing to say, low participation, mother tongue used. Furthermore the causal factors of students’ problems in speaking as performance in this case making presentation, included six factors that dominated students when making presentation the first was lack of vocabulary, anxiety, poor in grammar, lack of self confidence, fear of making mistake, and poor in pronounciation. In conclusion, inhibition was the most problem that students often faced in speaking as performance, and in the causal factors the linguistics factors dominated as the main causal factors of students speaking performance
