Abstract
This research was aimed to find out the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension skill through Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA strategy. The research subject was eight grade students. The researcher took VIII grade of SMP IT Mutiara Deli Serdang, it consisted of 12 students. This research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR) that consisted of four stages; planning, action, observation and reflection. The technique of collecting and analyzing data applied in this research were quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative data was obtained from the tests such as the pre-test, post-test I, and post-test II each test have 20 multiple choices. Qualitative data was obtained from the observation, interview, and documentation. The research results showed there was improvement in students’ reading comprehension skill through Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA strategy. It can be seen from the mean or average scores in pre-test was 53,75, post-test I was 73,75, and post-test II was 86,25. Meanwhile, the total score percentage of the pre-test was 25%, post-test I was 92% and post-test II was 100%. In each test, the students had various scores and the highest was the Post-test II score. This shows that there is an increase in the students' reading comprehension ability. The students also feel more enthusiastic and interested during teaching and learning activities. It can be concluded that the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy can improve students' reading comprehension skills.
