Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out what the methods are used by the teachers who teach Mentally Retarded students. Using a qualitative approach, I employed observation, interview, and documentation to collect the data. Some instruments used to complement the techniques include observation form and interview list. To ensure the validity of data, I use a smartphone as a recording tool and WhatsApp media to make confirmation with the subjects of the research. The findings suggest that the methods used by teachers at Global Kids Centre to teach English for Mentally Retarded students are Audio Lingual Method (ALM), Total Physical Response method (TPR), Picture and Picture method, Size Recognition method, and Trace the Dot method. Meanwhile, the method most frequently used is the Audio Lingual Method (ALM) in teaching English for Mentally Retarded students.
