Abstract

Until now, complaints of skin disorders are still a health problem in Indonesia. In Medan City, complaints of skin disorders are included in the 10 most common diseases which are in seventh position with a total of 19,513 cases. Garbage collectors are workers who have a high risk of suffering from various diseases such as complaints of skin disorders. The cause of complaints of skin disorders experienced by garbage collectors is due to a lack of awareness about personal hygiene (personal hygiene). The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there was a relationship between Personal Hygiene and Length of Contact with Complaints of Skin Disorders in Garbage Transporters in Medan Area District. This type of research is a quantitative research that is analytic in nature with a cross sectional design. The research population was all 167 garbage collectors with total sampling. The results of the study showed that 57.5% had poor personal hygiene and 55.1% had complaints of skin disorders, and generally had a working duration of ≥ 8 hours a day, 55.1%. The results of statistical tests using the Chi-square test showed that there was a relationship between Personal Hygiene and Length of Contact with Complaints of Skin Disorders in Garbage Transporters in Medan Area District. It is suggested to garbage collectors in the Medan Area District to change self-awareness in maintaining personal hygiene.
