Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the effect of documentary movie utilization on students’ speaking skill at the tenth grade of senior high school at a state Islamic senior high school (Madrasah Aliyah Negeri/MAN) Simalungun. The study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. Specifically this study used a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test group design. The research samples were divided into two classes, namely the experimental class and the control class. The experimental class received treatment from the researcher using a documentary movie, while the control class did not receive any treatment other than what the teacher usually used in the class. The population of this study from tenth grade of MAN Simalungun it was 181 students and the researcher only took 2 classes for research, it’s called is sample. The sample of this research consists of 28 students to experimental class and 28 students to control class. In collecting data, the researcher used the test, an oral test, in which the teacher asked the students to choose a story about their experience according to the topic that has been given as an instrument. The tests were pre-test which was given before the treatment and post-test were given after the treatment. To analyse the data, the researcher used IBM SPSS version-22 with the level of significance of 0,05. The students’ result of test in speaking by watching documentary movie was very good. The mean score of experimental class was 76,14 meanwhile control class was 66,57. The result of the independent test show, the Sig. (2-tailed) 0,000 < 0,05. It can be concluded that Ho was rejected and Ha was aaccepted. Based on the result above, there were significance difference between the students’ score in experimental class and control class. It means that watching documentary movie can be used in the process of learning English to help improve students’ English speaking skill.
