Abstract

The purpose of this study are to find out the students’ ability at listening English song at SMP Swasta Jambi Medan. The descriptive quantitative methodology was used for this analysis. The populations for this study consisted of 62 ninth-grade students, while the samples consisted of 31 of those same students with the random sampling technique. The research participants listened to an English song that was sung by students from 9-A. On the sheet of paper that has been handed to them with the song title "Let It Go," the students’ are to complete the lyrics by filling in the blanks and classified the words from the lyrics. The findings of the study are the total score of the students’ test were 1890, with the average score were 60,96. The lowest score of the students’ were 40, meanwhile the highest score of the students’ were 85. The percentage of the students’ score who got a score of <64 were 48,40% with the incompetent category. The students’ who got score 65-74 were 29% with the incompetent category. And then, the percentage of the students’ who got score 75-100 were 22,60% with the competent category. So, from the score that the students’ get can be seen that the students’ of the ninth grade of SMP Swasta Jambi Medan can be said to be in the incompetent category, because the students’ who got score <64 are more than the students’ who got score >64. Only a few of them can hear and understand the song being played when the listening test is performed or applied.
