Abstract

This research was a descriptive study which attempts to identify the types of grammatical error and find out dominant error in recount text made by male and female students of the third semester. The research was conducted in State Islamic University of North Sumatera. The subjects of this study were 10 male students and 10 female students from the Third Semester English Education Department of State Islamic University of North Sumatra for the academic year of 2020/2021. The researcher found five error types based on surface structure taxonomy. The male students made errors were 30 items (31%) of omission errors, 10 items (10%) of addition errors, 43 items (45%) of misformation errors, 2 items (2%) of misordering errors, 11 items (12%) of blends errors. The total errors made by the male students were 96 errors. The female students made errors were 17 items (27%) of omission errors, 3 items (5%) of addition errors, 36 items (57%) of misformation errors, 2 items (3%) of misordering errors, and 5 items (8%) of blends errors. The total errors made by the female students were 63 errors. The dominant error was doing by the male and female students are error of misformation. The causes of error in recount text made by male and female students there were carelessness, first language interference and translation. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the male students made more grammatical errors than female students in writing recount text. The students should learn more about English grammar practically.
