Abstract

Writing English text has been considered difficult for students in the EFL context. Several studies have revealed that the implementation of the gallerywalk technique can tackle students' difficulties in writing texts. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a significant effect of implementation gallery walk technique on the seventh-grade students writing skill of descriptive text at SMP Swasta Al-Washliyah 6 Air Putih. Quantitative research with experimental design was employed to investigate 116 students who were divided into experimental and control classes. After the sample was selected using cluster random sampling, VII-1 was chosen as the experimental class and VII-2 as the control class, with each class consisted of 29 students. The experimental class was taught by implementing gallery walk technique and the control class was conducted without implementing the gallerywalk technique. In collecting data, an essay test was used in this study the test was distributed into pre-test and post-test. In analyzing data using t-test formula with SPSS V.23, the first thing to do was determine descriptive statistics, normality, the homogeneity test, and finally the independent t-test (hypothesis). The results on the data analysis showed that tcount (t0) in the experimental class was higher than ttable (tt) at a significance level of 0.05 (tobserved =10,499 > ttable =1,673) at degrees of freedom (df) =56. Thus the hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Therefore, the gallerywalk technique is recommended for English language educators to improve students’ writing skills in writing descriptive text.
