Abstract
This research was conducted with the background that the learning process in the Translation classes requires a strategy to translate text from the source language to the target language. Because the strategy in translating is very important and becomes the main capital to be able to take a good result in Translation classes. Students' skills in using strategies in the translation classes, help students to reduce the difficulty of following the learning process in the translation classes. However, students who cannot use the strategy properly will create problems for them. This study aims to determine the strategies of students in the translation class through the types of strategies used by students and the types of problems faced by students. This research was conducted at all of Fourth Semester English Education Department State Islamic University of North Sumatra Medan batch 2020. The research methodology in this study used qualitative method where the data collected by the researcher is based on the results of interview and direct observation by the researcher. The results obtained by the researcher are the kinds of strategies used by students in the translation classes are manual strategies based on experts, application-based strategies, and combination of manual and application-based strategies. First, the researcher found four translation manual strategies in this research there are transposition, established equivalent, literal translation, and modulation. Second, the researcher found three application- based strategies in this research there are Google Translate, Online Document Translator, and U-Dictionary. Third, the researcher found the reason of the students to combining both of manual and application-based strategies according to the needs of their translation products. This way to fix and completely translation products of the students also to minimize errors in translation product. Then, the kinds of problems faced by students in the Translation classes are divided into four namely word choice problems, grammatical problems, pragmatic problems and cultural problems. Based on the findings above, it can be concluded that translation strategy is needed to translate a text from the source language to the target language. The use of translation strategies also makes it easier for students to translating a text and carry out the learning process in the Translation classes and helps them avoid problems when translating a text.
