Abstract
Wiska Putri Limbong. Registration Number: 0304181034. An Analysis of The Eleventh Grade Students’ Writing Summary at MAN 2 Tapanuli Tengah. A Thesis, Department of English Education. Faculty of Tarbiyah Science and Teachers Training, State Islamic University of North Sumatra, 2022. The purpose of this study was to describe the students’ writing summary ability. This study uses a quantitative descriptive research method. The population in this study was the eleventh grade students at MAN 2 Tapanuli Tengah in odd semesters. This study uses a simple random sampling technique in determining the sample. The research sample was 33 students out of a total of 135 students. Data collection techniques using tests and interviews. The researcher used the rubric for assessing writing summary adapted from Nancy Frey (2004) which consists of length, accuracy, paraphrasing, focus and convention to analyze the summary. Then, the researcher used a calculation guideline to calculate the score of students’ writing summary which was adapted from Nurgianto (1995:394). The results of the study concluded that the eleventh grade students at MAN 2 Tapanuli Tengah in writing summaries were able with an average score of 83.33. Meanwhile, the students' strengths are in the aspects of length, accuracy was categorized reasonable and for student weaknesses there are paraphrasing, focus and convention aspects with a score was categorized unable. The types of errors in students’ writing summary are grammar, punctuation, using capital letter and spelling word. The teacher's way to overcome students’ problem in writing summary is that students have to use dictionaries, translate texts, and practice more.
