Abstract

This research entitled “The Students’ Difficulties in Reading Comprehension at SMP Al-Farabi”. This research was conducted to find out about the difficulties in reading comprehension. As we know that reading is basic fundamental in learning L2, whereas for reading comprehension its mean that the ability to read text, process it, and comprehend its meaning is referred to as reading comprehension. An individual's ability to grasp a text is influenced by their natures and capabilities, one of which is the ability to draw inferences. This research aim to analyze what are students’ difficulties in learning reading comprehension process in using skimming and scanning. This research was conducted in SMP Al-Farabi in grade VIII-3 by thirty seven students. This research using qualitative with the naturalistic phenomenology with the observation and interview term. As the result, this research found that many students difficulties in finding detail information in a paragraph and make conclusion in a whole of paragraph. The result of this research are the main difficulty that students happened in knowledge of vocabulary. The researcher found that many students missing vocabulary and feeling boring rapidly when seeing the long text. The difficulties divided into two, those are skimmiming and scanning. The difficulties of skimming happened in finding main idea and drawing conclusion. Not few students think that the information of the text will we get by seeing the first sentence in a paragraph. For the scanning, this is the main difficulties and affect students’ comprehension those are vocabulary knowledge and finding specific information. The low ability in vocabulary knowledge as the main problem makes students think hard to understand and find out the information. These difficulties will be influenced of the motivation of the students in learning reading comprehension subject.
