Abstract

The research that has been carried out is entitled "Perceptions of English Education Department Student on Use of Grammar Tool in Writing", the objectives of this study are: (1) To describe student perceptions of the use of Grammarly in writing. (2) To describe the strengths and weaknesses of Grammarly as a grammar tool in writing. This study uses a qualitative method, with the collection of informants by purposive sampling. The informants of this research are 10 students of English Education Department class 2018 at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra, Medan. This study uses observation, interviews, and documentation to collect data. The process of data collection analysis in this study data analysis using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The findings of this study indicate that students have positive beliefs about the use of Grammarly in their writing. With the strength of Grammarly as an online grammar checker are free in accessibility, auto-correction and useful feedback. Meanwhile, Grammarly's weaknesses are misleading feedback, slow editing when editing larger chunks of text, over-checking, and being unable to detect tenses.
