Abstract

The objective of this research are to find out the student`s challenges in comprehending Islamic English Short Stories, how the challenges happened, and the reasons why the challenges happened. This research was conducted with the background that the student met challenges in comprehending Islamic English Short Stories. This research used the qualitative method to analyze the student`s challenges in comprehending the Islamic English Short Stories and narrate the analysis into sentences. The research participants are one student as the key informant, three students as the supporting informant, and one English teacher at MTS Pondok Pesantren Darul Hikmah Taman Pendidikan Islam Medan. To find out the student`s challenges in comprehending Islamic English Short Stories, the researcher used observation, interview, and documentation. After the researcher analyzed the data, the researcher found out that the student`s challenges in comprehending Islamic English Short Stories are presented in five challenges, namely: (1) The challenge in understanding the word, where the student could not understand certain vocabularies in the story and need to look up at the dictionary. This could be happened because the student had the limited vocabulary; (2) The challenge in combining the words into sentences, where the student could not arrange the translated vocabularies in a good order. This could be happened because the student was not often to read English books; (3) The challenge in coherency, where the student could not interpret the translated words into the logical translation. This could be happened because the complexity of English; (4) The challenge in reading speed, where the student could not track the important points of the text quickly. This could be happened because the student was not too interested in English; and (5) The challenge in inferencing, where the student could not make conclusion of the story perfectly. This could be happened because the student did not understand the whole story.
