Abstract

This study presents the results and analysis of interviews conducted with outstanding students of English at State Islamic University of North Sumatra. This study used phenomenological methods and data collection using interviews. The interview aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the learning strategies used by extraordinary students in English and what challenges they faced while studying during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research participants consisted of five outstanding students in English who were selected based on transcripts of grades from semesters 1 to 7. This finding is useful for students to understand learning strategies suitable for them to use in learning English, both offline and online. Students must determine the strategies needed in learning and analyze which strategies have a more positive impact on the learning process. So that students become more enthusiastic and motivated in learning. Thus, students will not easily feel bored and lazy to study.
