Abstract

This research aimed to find out the types of errors and the most dominant error made by the eighth grade students of Mts Swasta Darul Arafah Pangkalan Berandan, as well as to describe the reasons why the students made those errors. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative. The participant of this research was the eighth grade students of Mts Swasta Darul Arafah Pangkalan Berandan. The participant consisted of 15 students taken from the different classes, namely VIII-A, VIII-B, and VIII-C during 2021/2022 academic year. The data were collected through documentation and interview. According to the finding of this research, there were 274 total errors made by the students, which were divided into four types based on surface strategy taxonomy. Those were omission errors with 80 errors, addition errors with 62 errors, misformation errors with 109 errors, and misorder errors with 23 errors. However, the students committed the most dominant type of misformation error. It can be seen from the percentage result that misformation error was 40%, followed by omission error with 29%, then addition error with 23%, and the lowest error was misorder with 8%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the eighth grade students of Mts Swasta Darul Arafah Pangkalan Berandan made many errors in writing recount text, especially in using simple past tense because many students still carry their mother tongue habits to the target language (interlingual transfer), the students also tend to overgeneralize from the rules they have learned (intralingual transfer), and the teacher rarely asks them to write and compose their own texts using the target language as well as the teacher still lacks creativity in teaching English (context of learning). Because of these, the students must pay attention and practice more using simple past tense to make them familiar with it, so they can write a good recount text.
