Abstract

This research has been conducted entitled “An analysis of Grammatical errors in writing descriptive text by students in MAN Binjai”, with the background that the students often made grammatical errors in writing. The aimed of this research is analyzing the types, the differences, and the cause of errors in writing descriptive text committed by the Tenth Grade students in two classroom, that is natural science and social science students at MAN Binjai. This research used qualitative method with content analysis as the design, and it will be analyzed by using Dulay’s Theory. The data of this study are 20 descriptive writing, and the samplings were collected by purposive sampling method. All of the errors were committed into 4 categories, including omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The results of this study showed will be revealed as follows: (1) the most common errors made by both natural science and social science students are omission, followed by misformation, addition, and misordering; 2) Social science student made more grammatical errors than natural science students did in writing descriptive text, 3) The causes of errors found in this research are first language interference, carelessness, and translating by using literal technique. These findings have implication for students who read this, in order to improve their grammar skill and avoid the same errors, it also will help the teachers to give more attention on what kinds of grammar that should be taught in teaching English writing
