Abstract

The city of Medan is the only city that has complex problems relatedto waste management at the moment, especially related to the wastetransportation system in Sidorejo Hilir Village, Medan Tembung District. The procedure for collecting garbage in this village is carried out using the method of collecting garbage in the garbage bins of each house and the containers available at the landfills (TPS). However, the current situation is not supported by an efficient and effective waste transportation system, especially at the bottom of the waste transportationroute, resulting in waste breakdown in several areas, especially in Sidorejo Hilir Village where it is estimated that waste production is 5,400,000 tons per year, 450,000 tons per year. tonnes per year, and up to15 tonnes per day. The lack of a fleet is one of the factors causing the waste carriers to not work properly, what should have been transported once a day is now being transported twice a week resulting in excessive accumulation of waste. In this study using descriptive qualitative researchis a type of methodology used in this study. The informants from this study consisted of 8 people, namely two garbage officers, 1 garbageforeman, one kepling, two members of the local community, and two religious leaders. The results of the study showed that the waste transportation that occurred in Sidorejo Hilir Village was less effective than expected because the waste which normally had to be transported three times a week or even twice a week, instead piled up and caused the waste to spread to the surroundings.
