Abstract
Ectoparasites are parasites that attach to the surface of the body and depend on their host. Ectoparasites act as vectors of disease spreaders such as diarrhea, typhus, dysentery, myiasis, malaria and dengue fever. This study aims to determine the types of ectoparasites in cattle, prevalence rates, and intensity of ectoparasite attacks in Medan Estate, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency. The object of research used in this study were 25 intensively reared cows and 25 extensive cattle which were carried out from September to October 2021. Sampling was done manually and with a sweeping net (insect net). The ectoparasite samples that have been obtained are then identified and determined. The results showed 4 types of ectoparasites, namely Rhipicephalus microplus, Calliphora vomitoria, Aedes triseriatus, and Musca domestica. The highest prevalence percentage was found in extensively reared cattle, namely, Rhipicephalus microplus with a value of 100% (Always: always), while the lowest prevalence was in intensively reared cattle, namely, Calliphora vomitoria with a value of 42% (Commonly: generally). The highest ectoparasite intensity was found in Rhipicephalus microplus with a value of 9.3 (Heavy: severe) which was maintained extensively. The intensity of ectoparasite attack was lowest in Calliphora vomitoria species with a value of 2.6 (Light: mild) in intensive care.
