Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of guidance and counseling activities, the implementation of guidance and counseling with a client centered counseling approach in improving student learning independence, the role of guidance and counseling with a client centered counseling approach in increasing learning independence, and obstacles and efforts to overcome the implementation of guidance and counseling with a client centered counseling approach in increasing the learning independence of MAN 4 Martubung Medan. This research method is to use a phenomenological qualitative research method that is to uncover the problems that occur so as to find and understand what is hidden behind the problems that occur. The implementation of this phenomenological qualitative research aims to understand and interpret various existing problems. The results of this study are (1) Types of guidance and counseling activities carried out at MAN 4 Martubung Medan, namely orientation services, information services, placement and distribution services, content mastery services, individual counseling services, group guidance services, group counseling services, consulting services, mediation services, application of instruments, case conferences, and home visits, (2) Implementation of guidance and counseling client centered approach in fostering the independence of student learning that is the introduction of students with learning problems, efforts to help students who experience learning problems, increased learning motivation, and the development of attitudes and effective learning habits, (3) Guidance and counseling client centered approach has a role in the independence of student learning where students are able to understand problems in learning, there is an increase in learning motivation, and the development of good attitudes and habits in learning, (4) Barriers to the implementation of fostering independence bell teaching students at MAN 4 Martubung Medan, namely the number of mentoring teachers who are still limited in number, the lack of optimal implementation of teacher guidance and counseling cooperation with teachers in the field of study in schools, and the lack of awareness in students to be active in guidance and counseling activities in schools. Efforts to overcome obstacles in the implementation of fostering student self-reliance are providing knowledge and training for supervisors, collaborating with teachers in the field of study, and providing understanding to students.
