Abstract

Key Words: Difficulties and Translating English Sentences to Indonesian This research purposes to find out and describe the difficulties that faced by students of North Sumatera Province Medan in translating English sentences to Indonesian. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The subject of research is the English sentences that translated into Indonesian and the object of research is the accuracy, acceptability and readability. The research methodology that used is qualitative descriptive method, which describes the natural state in depth and detail about the difficulties in translating English into Indonesian. To find out and describes the difficulties of students, the reaseacher used reading, analysing, writing and conluding the score of the students translation product. The instrument of this research is the researcher, as a key instrument using the sheet questions and answers and the table of translation quality assessment. The results of research in finding and describing of students difficulties in translating English to Indonesian is 19.4% of accuracy, it means that they are very difficult to understand the meaning and message of words and sentences and they do not know the message contained. Then, 21.4% of acceptability, it means that they do not understand the grammatical structure of both text and they can not differ the slang and formal language. The last is 22% of readability, it means that they are difficult to understand the readability elements of the text reader or not and they are difficult to understand the culture of both text. So, the dominant difficulties is the students are very difficult to understand the meaning and message of words and sentences and they do not know the message contained because they don’t master the vocabularies.
